Symi struck me as a place geared to large scale tourism - the tavernas around the port had lots of tables - but when I was there there were not many tourists.

One pleasant feature (this was in the mid 1990s) ws a cafe with a range of foreign newspapers. It was pleasant after a day's excursion to sink into a comfortable chair, order a drink, and read a wide range of English newspapers!
